Philip H. Glatfelter had a special dream when he arrived in the tiny hamlet of Spring Forge on a chilly December day in 1863. A defunct paper mill was on the auction block and the 26-year-old had visions of opening its doors and turning a profit.

Philip was determined to meet the challenge. It took a lot of elbow grease, a few prayers and the help of a handful of eager employees to get the mill going. By the middle of 1864, the mill was producing 1,500 pounds of newsprint daily.

Today, the P. H. Glatfelter Company is the largest manufacturer of book publishing papers in the United States. Our product line has grown to include some of the finest tobacco papers in the world and a diverse group of specialty products created exclusively for our customers.
