Philip H. Glatfelter had a special dream when he arrived in the tiny hamlet of Spring Forge on a chilly December day in 1863. A defunct paper mill was on the auction block and the 26-year-old had visions of opening its doors and turning a profit.
Philip was determined to meet the challenge. It took a lot of elbow grease, a few prayers and the help of a handful of eager employees to get the mill going. By the middle of 1864, the mill was producing 1,500 tons of newsprint daily.
