P. H. Glatfelter Company Elects New Director, Announces Quarterly Dividend

York, PA June 21, 2000: P. H. Glatfelter Company’s Board of Directors today elected Ronald J. Naples to serve as a director of the Company, which is headquartered York, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Naples, 54, is currently the Chairman and CEO of Quaker Chemical Corporation, which he joined in October 1995. Quaker Chemical Corporation, headquartered in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, is a worldwide developer, producer, and marketer of custom-formulated chemical specialty products and a provider of fluid management services for manufacturers around the globe.

Previously Mr. Naples was Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Hunt Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer and distributor of office and arts and crafts products. He joined Hunt in 1976 as Vice President – International, and served as President and Executive Vice President before becoming Chief Executive in 1981, and Chairman in 1987. In Mr. Naples’ time as CEO, Hunt Manufacturing grew approximately four time in sales, to over $300 million, and five times in market capitalization.

Immediately prior to joining Hunt, Mr. Naples was the Executive Director of a Presidential Task Force on energy problems. He is a former White House Fellow, appointed for 1974-75, and served in the Ford Administration as Assistant to the Counselor to the President for Economic Affairs, Kenneth Rush, and as a Special Assistant to the head of the Federal Energy Administration, Frank Zarb.

Mr. Naples also serves on the boards of directors of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of the Arts, the Franklin Institute, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet, and Friends’ Central School, as well as other civic and arts organizations.

Mr. Naples holds a Master of Business Administration with Distinction (1974) from the Harvard Business School, where he was awarded First and Second-Year honors, and a Walter E. Heller Fellowship. He also holds a Master of Arts (1972) in International Economic Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Mr. Naples received a Bachelor of Science (1967) from the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was awarded the Military Order of World Wars Award.

Mr. Naples brings to the Board extensive international business experience, as well as experience in change management. Both qualities are viewed as extremely beneficial to development of the business strategy and attainment of the corporate vision for the P. H. Glatfelter Company.
